A World of Shoes: Exhibit at Spurlock Museum |
Is an exhibit on shoes cool? You bet your boots! Find out more by visiting the Spurlock Museum’s fall Campbell Gallery exhibit A World of Shoes, opening September 4. Over 60 pairs of shoes from 20 different countries will be featured.
The main themes of the exhibit all begin with the letter “S:” Sports, Style, Soul, Service, Substance, Self, and Sensuality. There is also an introductory area inspired by the wall of shoes display at Chicago’s Field Museum. Near the entrance to the exhibit, visitors can share their own shoe stories and take a quiz on shoe names.
A significant number of the shoes on display are loans by individuals from across central Illinois. The Museum of the Grand Prairie in Mahomet loaned artifacts, including two examples of animal shoes. A pair of Weary Willie clown shoes worn by renowned entertainer Emmett Kelly has come in from the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Shoes worn by Shinto priests at the Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawai’i can be found in the Soul area.
A World of Shoes will be on display during regular Museum hours from September 4, 2012 through February 10, 2013. The Spurlock Museum is located at 600 S. Gregory, just across the street east of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana. Museum hours are Tuesdays 12-5; Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 9-5; Saturdays 10-4; and Sundays 12-4. For more information on the exhibit and related events, call 217-244-3355 or email ksheahan@illinois.edu. |

SHARE Horse Rescue Open House |
The Society for Hooved Animals’ Rescue and Emergency (SHARE Horse Rescue) will hold its annual open house on Saturday, October 20th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m at their location at 2946 County Road 800 N, in Dewey.
Saturday’s event includes many family-friendly activities: horse and pony rides, face painting, games, and demonstrations. Visitors can tour three barns and interact with over two dozen of the rescue’s friendliest adoptable horses. Directions and more information can be found on their website at http://www.s-h-a-r-e.net.
This annual event is one of the group’s largest fundraisers with last year’s event bringing in over $2000 in monetary donations and supplies. The group hopes to raise more this year. A wish list on their website highlights items the group can use besides money or gift cards to local farm stores.
This year the open house is even more important because of rising costs due to this summer’s drought. Currently, more than 40 horses live at the rescue awaiting their new home. The group provides medical care and training to help the horses find new homes.
Every year the open house helps new volunteers find the rescue “We rely on our volunteers to help with everything from feeding and watering the horses every night to special projects like barn and fence repair and fundraising and administrative work” said board member Lori Cooper. “We actually welcome people with no horse experience. If you’re thinking you might want to be a horse owner someday, this is a great way to gain experience in caring for them and learn more about what’s involved.”
The Society for Hooved Animals’ Rescue and Emergency was formed in 2005. Over the years they have provided care for hundreds of horses, ponies, mules, and donkeys. In 2012 the group has taken in 20 horses and adopted out 18, and continue to receive additional calls for help daily. |
