A World of Shoes: Exhibit at Spurlock Museum |
Is an exhibit on shoes cool? You bet your boots! Find out more by visiting the Spurlock Museum’s fall Campbell Gallery exhibit A World of Shoes, opening September 4. Over 60 pairs of shoes from 20 different countries will be featured.
The main themes of the exhibit all begin with the letter “S:” Sports, Style, Soul, Service, Substance, Self, and Sensuality. There is also an introductory area inspired by the wall of shoes display at Chicago’s Field Museum. Near the entrance to the exhibit, visitors can share their own shoe stories and take a quiz on shoe names.
A significant number of the shoes on display are loans by individuals from across central Illinois. The Museum of the Grand Prairie in Mahomet loaned artifacts, including two examples of animal shoes. A pair of Weary Willie clown shoes worn by renowned entertainer Emmett Kelly has come in from the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Shoes worn by Shinto priests at the Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawai’i can be found in the Soul area.
A World of Shoes will be on display during regular Museum hours from September 4, 2012 through February 10, 2013. The Spurlock Museum is located at 600 S. Gregory, just across the street east of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana. Museum hours are Tuesdays 12-5; Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 9-5; Saturdays 10-4; and Sundays 12-4. Past Collides with Present In Mt. Vernon United Methodist Christmas Play, “Back to Bethlehem”!
Bored teenagers collide across time when past meets present in the Mt. Vernon Champaign United Methodist Church’s Christmas play, “Back to Bethlehem.” As the drama progresses, the youths’ faith is renewed with laughter, tears, and miracles. During the progress, a couple of squabbling guardian angels intervene and their quarreling results in a hilarious confusion of time sequences. But the heart’s desire of a modern teenager is finally granted: to “BE in Bethlehem the night Jesus was born.” Throw in Scrooge, George Bailey of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” taciturn Roman guards, beloved seasonal music and a casts of—well, not thousands--but several dozen children, youth and adults, and the result is a delightful holiday musical with something for each person in your family. A free performance of “Back to Bethlehem” will be offered on Saturday, December 22, 7 p.m., and will be repeated Sunday morning, December 23, at the church’s 10:30 a.m. worship service.

To arrive at the church, drive north on Mattis Ave., approximately 2.5 miles north of St. Thomas More school, to Country Road 2200 North, turn left, and drive one mile to Country Road 900 East.
